The Fifth Ward in central Houston is one of our area's poorest, with street after street of ramshackle homes and government projects, an area populated predominantly by African-Americans. In three neighborhoods there, we gave bikes and gifts to over 12,000 children, turning a blighted ghetto into a vibrant community of smiling young cyclists.

All of Elves & More's efforts are focused on helping children get out of poverty. Visualize 18,000 brand-new bicycles loaded into more than 100 large trucks and delivered to 18,000 underprivileged children in entire neighborhoods, all on a surprise basis on December 22, with Santa at the front.

It was an incredible sight: 4,654 men, women and children building bicycles for underprivileged children this Saturday alone. Add to that the 3,600 volunteers earlier in the week and it was a record-breaking week for the Bike Build
